LAS VEGAS (September 19, 2024) –The Shade Tree, a 24-hour accessible shelter designed to specifically meet the needs of domestic violence and human trafficking survivors, their children and pets (through a partnership with Noah’s Animal House), will host events and activities to commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), an initiative throughout October to raise awareness and showcase those working to end violence against women and their children.

The 35-year Southern Nevada nonprofit invites the media to join in the effort to raise awareness about domestic violence, the local resources available and the various ways Las Vegans may get involved to help support survivors at The Shade Tree on their journey to dignity, stability and self-reliance.

  • The Shade Tree’s Children’s Activity Center is unique among Southern Nevada organizations offering services to displaced women and their children. Interviews available with Tyra Mitchell, director of youth programs and family services, who oversees the programming and activities for children residing at the shelter.
  • As the largest safe shelter facility in the Las Vegas valley with 256 beds, The Shade Tree serves as a vital partner for other Las Vegas nonprofits that refer clients for shelter and programming. Recently, The Shade Tree announced a collaboration with Signs of HOPE, a nonprofit dedicated to offering hope, help and healing to those affected by sexual violence and exploitation, whereby a Signs of HOPE trained advocate will be at The Shade Tree every week on Thursdays to offer survivor-centered support and resources. Interviews available with representatives from The Shade Tree and Signs of HOPE about this new program.
  • Thursday, Oct. 10 – Once Upon A Gala at Zouk Nightclub inside Resorts World. Mikalah Gordon, singer and top 12 finalist on the fourth season of American Idol, will serve as mistress of ceremonies for The Shade Tree’s annual celebratory fundraiser. Tickets are available now for purchase online. All ticket sale proceeds benefit the shelter:
    • $350 a ticket: includes access into the gala at 7 p.m., unlimited small bites and libations from various culinary and beverage stations, photo opportunities, entertainment and more. This ticket includes seating at an assigned, shared booth in the upper section of the venue.
    • $450 a ticket: includes exclusive access to the poolside VIP Secret Garden Soiree at 5:30 p.m. where guests will enjoy small bites, libations and entertainment, followed by entry to the gala at 7 p.m. to enjoy unlimited small bites and libations from various culinary and beverage stations, photo opportunities, entertainment and more. This ticket includes open seating during the Secret Garden Soiree and seating at an assigned, shared booth in the upper section of the venue during the gala.
  • Thursday, Oct. 17 – Purple Thursday is the DVAM national day of action during which everyone is encouraged to wear purple to raise awareness about domestic violence and to support survivors and those who are working tirelessly to stem the tide of interpersonal violence through prevention, education and healing services. Media is asked to wear purple on this day, post pictures on social media with a supportive note and tag The Shade Tree on Instagram @shadetreevegas.

Domestic Violence Statistics: According to the World Population Review, 44 percent of Nevadan women and 33 percent of men experience domestic violence in their lifetime. According to  hotline.org, one in four women and one in seven men aged 18 and older in the United States have been the victim of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Intimate partner violence alone affects more than 12 million people every year.

The Shade Tree, a 35-year Southern Nevada nonprofit, is a 24-hour accessible emergency shelter for domestic violence and human trafficking survivors and their children.
